Web Space FAQ's

How do I create my personal webspace?
Use an FTP program to FTP into your account. Once you are into your space create a folder called 'public_html' (without the single quotes). All your files that you want to show as public should go into that folder.

If you have any problems, please contact us at 1 888 628-4669.

How do I use FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is simply a way for one computer to send file(s) to another. The exact steps you need to take vary from client to client, but the basic procedure is this:

  1. Have your client software connect to personal.riverusers.com. Log in using your username and password.
  2. Put the file(s) you want to have on the web in your /home/[username]/public_html directory.
  3. Rename your main HTML (HyperText Markup Language) document to index.html
  4. Make sure all of the files you need are up there
  5. Log out of your FTP client software and visit your new site!

How do I get started?
Always remember that just as imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, plaigarism is the sincerest form of imitation. Find a page you like, copy the HTML source, and modify it to be what you want. Of course, it is considered polite if you let the original writer know that you're doing this.

As long as it's not something prohibited by the Terms and Conditions for personal web pages, then yes. However, if it goes above 2000 hits per month, then you will be considered a business web customer and charged the appropriate rate for the space used.

Which authoring tools should I use?
To be honest, it's up to you. Some people like to use Netscape Gold or Adobe PageMaker, others like Microsoft FrontPage, still others like NetObjects Fusion. Die-hard fanatics will use a simple text editor like Notepad or TeachText.

Where are my pictures?
Check these things first:

  • Did I upload them along with the index.html file? In the index.html file, are the pictures correctly referred to? (Remember - our web server is case sensitive!)
  • Did I use the <img> tag correctly? (Rembered both quotes, spelled everything right, etc.)
    <img src="pathname/filename.gif">
  • Finally, before you upload your page, use the "Load File..." command in your browser to check and make sure that everything looks the way you want it to. If it does, and the answers to all of the questions above are all "yes", then call us at 1 888 628-4669.

Can someone else rewrite my page?
No. Unless they have your password, then nobody else can change your web pages. Remember - keep your password secret!

How do I get the word out about my page?
There are many ways. For instance, if a user made a page about fish and aquariums, then they might post a message in rec.aquaria, a newsgroup about aquariums. Alternatively, if a user made a page about weekly scores from playing dominoes with their friends, they might simply tell or email them.
