WOW! What more can I say about TLAC-3? Barry and Connie Booker and James Cox went above and beyond the call of duty to put on one fantastic event. We ran 82 cars through the lights four times each in four hours and twenty minutes. There were only two DNFs all day and just a handful of cones hit (four of which were mine!) Drivers came from as far away as Houston and Little Rock and a great time was had by all. It was also our first use of the course-lining machine. It really made the course (and the optical illusions) stand out.
The
new timing gear is working flawlessly. A special thanks to the Alexandria crew
for helping make it even better. Bob Evenson made us some extension cables for
the sensors and he and BooBoo made us a wooden stand for the timer, which puts
it at a much better angle for viewing. Thanks, too, to the SOWELA crew for
letting us borrow their large-digit display for our TLAC. Our equipment fund
continues to grow and soon we’ll have one of those big displays of our own as
well as some event management software to make life easier for everybody.
We’re
half way through this year already. Our membership is growing. A lot of folks
are visiting our website and calling our hotline. We’re having fun events.
Nationally, our membership is up to 66,000 and construction is well underway on
the new national office in Topeka, KS. The move from Centennial (used to be
Englewood) is planned for November. The SCCA University is taking shape, too,
and it won’t be long before they start taking classes on the road to Divisional
meetings. In short, we’re on a roll – both locally and nationally. Now is a
great time to be a member of the SCCA. Please help spread the word.
Now,
on to local business. Since we’re half
way through the year already, that means we’re getting even closer to the time
that we’ll have to nominate and elect our officers for 2003. I’ve told you
before – and I’ll tell you again – I AM NOT GOING TO RUN FOR R.E. ANY MORE!
This is my tenth year at the helm of this ship and that’s about eight years too
many. If you like where we are and where we’re going, somebody is going to have
to step forward and take the wheel. I’ll do everything I can to help my
successor, but I’m not going to try to steer this ship any longer. It doesn’t
take a rocket scientist to run this club. All it takes is somebody with a
little bit of organizing ability and a lot of love for other people.
If
you’re interested in running for any of our elected offices, please get in
touch with me or with some other current officer. This club won’t continue to
grow and prosper unless YOU get involved.
Until
next time, go fast – have fun – but be SAFE.

Without a doubt in my mind, I think TLAC 3 was the best-organized, best run, with the best course design this region has put on since I have been a member. Connie, Barry and James have always done a wonderful job for this club, but this time they out did themselves.
I also want to thank Lester Ewing, our
Weather Chairman, for the great control of Mother Nature that he exhibited. As
many of you know, about eight years ago I created the position of Weather
Chairman (a semi-official office). Lester has been our Rally Chairman for as
long as I remember, and you all know how many rallies we run, and thought he
could easily handle this second office. He has done an outstanding job in this
capacity. We have not had more than a handful of rain-outs in those eight
years, and I believe he was probably out of town during those. So thanks again Lester!
Like
John, I do not plan to be your Newsletter editor after this year. It is
becoming more like a chore than it used to be. I have enjoyed this office over
the years (it has given me a chance to
voice my opinions, of which I have many), and has kept me in the information
loop, but I find myself burnt out. This is not a task to be done by someone
that does not enjoy it. It is too easy to procratinate.
Starting
with this issue, we will no longer mail hard copies of The Driver’s View to
all members, those that I have email address for will be notified by email,
when the Newsletter has been posted to
the website, all others will continue to receive hard copies. With the
increasing costs of snail-mail, I encourage all members that have email
addresses to please send them to me..
Remember,
“Drive Fast, No Cones, and have FUN!!!”
