REport

by John Lieberman

WOW! You guys and gals really rock!!

What a way to start off a new year. We had 20 students attend our season-opening autox school. They all got gobs of seat time and it really showed at the next day’s season-opening autox. Unfortunately, all that seat time also took a heavy toll on a few cars - corded tires, a smoked clutch, busted shift linkage, etc! A big note of thanks has to go out to Bruce Nock fo4r organizing the school and the Sunday autox - to Richard White for coming out of retirement to help instruct - and to Barry Booker and James Cox for all of the help they provided. Based on the success of that school, we may even try to do another one sometime later in the year.

I do want to thank all of you, again, for helping foot my bill to attend the national convention in Denver. It was either the fifth or sixth one I’ve attended - I’ve lost count - and, by far, the best. The club of ours is moving back into the national prominence it once enjoyed. Our membership now tops 63,000. We have several new national sponsors. And our President, Steve Johnson, is an absolute jewel. The move of our national office from Denver to Topeka is going full steam. The SCCA University is up and running. And the future looks very bright.

Unfortunately, we still have some money problems and that’s going to mean a national dues increase of $10 on June 1st. It’s the first time our national dues have gone up in four years. Our regional dues won’t change. Plus, in the aftermath of 9/11, we’re facing some pretty stiff insurance issues. And, because of that, event safety is more important now than ever before. So please understand if I raise a safety issue.

On the local level, our timer fund has been growing by leaps and bounds. We elected to take all of the proceeds from our school - less expenses - and devote them to the fund, too. That means that we’re about one event away from being able to buy the new timing gear! We’ll probably spend a lot of time at our March 4th meeting discussing that issue and deciding which way to go with it.

We’re off and running on what could very well prove to be the best year in Red River’s history. Thank you all for being a part of it. We have an ambitious schedule but we also have an ambitious attitude. And, by golly, we’re going to DO it!!

Until next time, go fast - have fun - but be safe.

John

MY VIEW

by Gary Linde

I’ve had numerous requests for membership applications during the last few months, now I can agree with John, we are on the grow! I think the Autocross school headed up by Bruce Nock is more responsible for this than anything else. We’ve had a lot of novice participation in the past year, but they weren’t joining the SCCA, just racing with us. Many raced with us one time and got discouraged and never came back. After the school they saw that they also could be competitive and are beginning to join. I’ll keep you all informed on our progress. Right now our membership stands at 51 members. I would like to see our membership rise to approx 80 members by the end of this season.

My opinion of our last event was very positive. I know many of you felt it to be too busy and slow, but think of it as an extension of the school. We were treated to almost every type of turn you will come upon in this sport. If my count is correct we had 23 turns on that 14 acre patch of asphalt. I was able to negotiate the entire course 4 times without a DNF (granted I didn’t turn in the times many of you did)_with my history of geriatric brain fade, it couldn’t have been that difficult to follow. And what a learning experience.

I really wanted to thank Richard White for all the help he gave me, specially in finding the right tire pressures. I doubted what he was telling me, but I did it anyhow and He was RIGHT! On the skid pad, following his instruction on tire pressure, my Miata stuck like glue. Now I need to spead up my thought process to keep up with the car, common problem with us 60 year olds, right Bob?

I guess I’ve voiced my opinion enough for one month, so remember “Drive fast, no cones, and have Fun!”
